WHO slams Israel’s attacks on Gaza health facilities

World Health Organization (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has called for the protection of healthcare facilities in Gaza following an Israeli strike on a medical warehouse near Al-Aqsa Hospital on August 1.

In a statement on X, he said the attack destroyed essential medical supplies, including some delivered by WHO, and caused damage to Al-Aqsa Hospital.

“Health care facilities must never be attacked or militarized,” he added.

WHO has recorded nearly 1,000 attacks on healthcare in Gaza since October 2023, when Israel began its genocidal war on the territory, resulting in more than 1,000 deaths and 1,700 injuries.

Netanyahu says he has ‘disagreements’ with Trump on plan for Gaza

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he has disagreements with the US president over last week’s Board of Peace agreement aimed at stabilizing Gaza.

“There are disagreements with President Trump that I don’t hide regarding the recent agreement with Hamas,” Netanyahu said. “Hamas must be disarmed and the Gaza Strip demilitarized before moving to the reconstruction phase.”

The Israeli leader made the comments after meeting with lead envoy for Trump’s Board of Peace, Nickolay Mladenov.

Trump last week said the board had struck a “historic” agreement with Hamas, which will see the Palestinian group disarm and Israeli troops withdraw from the war-torn enclave. The deal calls for a phased disarmament tied to the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.

But amid Israeli pushback, the Board of Peace has since said Hamas must completely disarm before Israel withdraws from Gaza.

Netanyahu isn't saying anything about withdrawal of his troops from Gaza. He and other members of the belligerent system and hard liners from the Israeli public have been continuously reiterated, that the troops will not be withdrawn from Gaza.

"The deal calls for a phased disarmament tied to the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza." & "Board of Peace has since said Hamas must completely disarm before Israel withdraws from Gaza."

The "board" resorts to partying with the Israeli demands or acts in violation of what has been agreed upon in the deal.

We notice here the same as seen with the framework for Lebanon and the Memorandum of Understanding: systematic altering and or arbitrary interpretation.

Far-right Israeli ministers demand new vote on Gaza plan

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and Settlement Minister Orit Strock have demanded a new cabinet vote on the Board of Peace’s plan to allow a multinational security force to enter Gaza.

According to The Jerusalem Post, the far-right ministers claimed the initial approval for the plan was based on “incomplete and misleading information” and urged Prime Minister Netanyahu to rescind the approval until a new vote is held.

The approved plan also allows the launch of a pilot humanitarian zone for Palestinians in Gaza, The Jerusalem Post said.

Smotrich and Strock’s demand comes after Trump announced that his Board of Peace had struck a deal that will see Hamas disarmed and Israeli troops withdraw from Gaza. But amid pushback from Israel, the board has since said Hamas must completely disarm before Israeli forces pull back.

These Israelis were only realizing that the disarmament of Hamas by the  so-called International Security Force (ISF) will be implemented without Israeli interference. Hamas has stated that its weapons will only be handover to the ISF.

The Israelis want control over everything even Trump's Gaza plan. That the Israelis don't trust Hamas, it is because of themselves. 

What is the dispute over Hamas’s disarmament?

Trump’s Board of Peace has said that Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza will only begin after Hamas is completely disarmed.

It follows objections by Israel to the board’s disarmament deal with Hamas that was announced last week.

• Trump announced the deal last week, saying the agreement will be carried out “in carefully structured phases” and that “as disarmament is completed, Israeli forces will withdraw”.
• The text of the deal called for an end to Israeli attacks on Gaza and tied the disarmament process to the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. It also called for the implementation of the ceasefire agreement signed in Sharm el-Sheikh last year, which includes the unrestricted entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza and medical evacuations.
• Hamas said the “implementation of the agreement will be dependent on Israel fulfilling its commitments”, while Israel opposed the deal.
• Israel said its forces will not withdraw beyond the “Yellow Line” demarcating the areas it controls in Gaza, until Hamas disarms.
• Nickolay Mladenov, the board’s director, met with Netanyahu on Monday and said the withdrawal of Israeli forces beyond the Yellow Line “will take place only once decommissioning is complete, as Hamas committed to the mediators”.
• The statement added that this “applies to light weapons, heavy weapons, and the tunnels alike”.

UN slams Israel’s killings of civilians after deadliest month in Gaza this year

The United Nations has condemned Israel’s killings of civilians in Gaza and called for the protection of healthcare facilities amid a rise in Israeli attacks on the besieged Strip.

Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said “we condemn all killings of civilians”, noting that health authorities have reported more than 150 deaths in July – “the highest monthly death toll since the beginning of the year”.

Haq also expressed concern over the Israeli attack that destroyed a medical warehouse near Al-Aqsa Hospital on Friday.

“Healthcare facilities must never be attacked or militarized,” Haq said, while also warning of dwindling medical supplies across Gaza, including insulin for diabetes patients and medicine for those with cardiovascular disease. He also said that “alcohol-based disinfectants, which are essential for hand hygiene and routine infection prevention, are largely unavailable”.

“More supplies required to prevent and control infections are pending Israeli approval to bring into Gaza,” he added.

Mass funeral in Gaza City of 112 killed in same 2023 Israeli attack

The funeral that was held today in Gaza City lays bare a devastating tragedy for the people who are still trapped under the debris of their destroyed neighborhoods.

In the coming hours, as we receive confirmation from the Gaza Civil Defence and the Ministry of Health, Palestinians will lay to rest the remains of 112 individuals from the Abu Shariah and Hassayna families. Both are extended families living in the Sabra neighborhood, in the southern part of Gaza City … Both families have lived under repeated Israeli attacks.

As far as we know, they were among 308 Palestinians killed in one day in Gaza City, including 40 women, 30 children and 7 people with disabilities.

The Gaza Civil Defence teams said that they were unable to retrieve them from beneath the rubble due to the lack of fuel and a significant shortage of rescue equipment … The Civil Defence teams and local communities banded together, using very primitive tools, to find any remains and give them a dignified burial.

This funeral shows how devastating the cost of this genocide has been, as there are still thousands of people trapped under the wreckage of their destroyed buildings, specifically in areas that have been seen as active war zones, such as the eastern parts of Gaza City.

Families living in Gaza City are telling that they’ve got relatives who are still under the rubble of their destroyed homes; they were unable to retrieve them. One of the bleakest testimonies we have heard from Civil Defence forces is that they hear the voices of those who are trapped for days, but later those voices vanish.

Death toll in Israel’s war on Gaza reaches 73,377

The Health Ministry in Gaza says two Palestinians have been killed and 10 wounded in Israeli attacks across the Strip over the past 24 hours.

According to the ministry, since the “ceasefire” with Israel began on October 11, a total of 1,252 people have been killed and 4,120 wounded.

The ministry said the cumulative toll since the start of the genocidal war on October 7, 2023 has reached 73,377 killed, with 174,230 wounded.

Palestinian patients return to Gaza as thousands still await medical evacuation

Palestinian patients have returned to Gaza after receiving medical treatment abroad, reuniting with loved ones after nearly three years of separation.

Israel’s systematic destruction of Gaza’s healthcare system has forced thousands of Palestinians to seek treatment outside the enclave while thousands more remain blocked by Israel from leaving to seek urgently needed medical care.

Jordan condemns Israeli attacks in Gaza

Jordan has backed Qatar, Turkiye and Egypt in their condemnations of Israel’s continued “violations of the ceasefire” in Gaza.

“These violations constitute a flagrant breach of international law and international humanitarian law,” Jordan’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Amman also called for the “unhindered entry of sufficient and sustainable humanitarian aid” into Gaza as well as “full protection for civilians, medical facilities and humanitarian workers”.

Qatar says Israel obstructing Gaza peace process, should withdraw

In his news briefing earlier, the spokesperson of Qatar’s Foreign Ministry Majed al-Ansari said Israel’s recent attacks on Gaza, which led to “the fall of more than 30 martyrs”, was “an attempt to escalate and obstruct the implementation” of a peace plan.

“It is clear to the international community who is obstructing the implementation of the agreement,” al-Ansari said. “The full responsibility lies on the Israeli side.”

Regarding Israel’s occupation of Gaza, he said, “We think Israel should withdraw from all lands that it occupies in adherence to international law. This occupation cannot be justified by any current or past security situations.”

Israeli forces ‘are not withdrawing from the current lines in Gaza’: Netanyahu

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israeli troops “are not withdrawing from the current lines in Gaza until Hamas is completely disarmed”, according to a video posted on Facebook and cited by the Times of Israel newspaper.

Netanyahu was quoted as saying that “Trump thinks, and his team thinks, that Hamas can be totally disarmed and Gaza demilitarised – we’re looking into it”.

“They sent us a draft, we didn’t agree. It wasn’t our draft. We sent our responses,” he said, adding that those responses had been sent before the issue was taken up by the media, according to the Times of Israel.

Board of Peace official says Gaza roadmap faces long, difficult process

A Board of Peace official has told our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic that efforts are now focused on implementing the Gaza roadmap and advancing Trump’s broader ceasefire plan.

“Trump’s plan offers Palestinians a better future without Hamas rule and provides security for Israelis,” the official said.

The official added that a week ago, few expected Hamas to accept handing power to a technocratic government and giving up its weapons.

“We must now implement the roadmap. A long and difficult process lies ahead,” the official said.

Palestinian FM accuses Israeli forces of supporting West Bank colonist attacks

Palestinian Foreign Minister Varsen Aghabekian Shahin has told Al Jazeera that the sharp rise in illegal Israeli colonist attacks across the occupied West Bank is being carried out with direct support and coordination from the Israeli government and military.

The comments came as authorities said at least 20 Palestinians have died so far this year as a result of the violence.

“Colonists are more organized. They more they work in a more coordinated manner. And all of this is under the guidance of this Israeli government. And they are shielded and protected by the Israeli occupation forces,” Shahin said.

She also acknowledged criticism about the Palestinian Authority’s (PA) inability to defend its citizens.

“What we can do is what we can do. There is so much we can do,” she said.

Shahin went on to highlight diplomatic efforts to end the violence.

“We get in touch with all countries, we send statements, we send letters, we send appeals to various countries, and we have responses,” she said. “And we’ve asked many countries, most countries to do something about settlements and colonist terrorism. And to the credit of some, they have taken measures. We would like to see more measures.”

 

Israeli colonist attacks continue in occupied West Bank

• Israeli colonists have attacked homes in areas south of the city of Nablus, as escalating violence across the occupied West Bank in the past week continues.
• Homes around the villages of Jalud and Talfit were attacked, although residents were able to confront colonists and stop them from setting fire to buildings, according to Anadolu agency.
• Colonists also damaged an electric grid in Madama village. Council chief Rami Nassar told Anadolu it’s the second time this week that colonist attacks have led to power outages in the area.
• In Hebron, Israeli soldiers raided several neighborhoods and arrested eight former Palestinian prisoners, the Wafa news agency reported. Several were assaulted before being released. The Fawwar refugee camp, south of Hebron, was also ransacked.
• Colonists attacked Palestinian homes in the Khirbet al-Kharaba community in Masafer Yatta, according to Wafa.
• A Palestinian student was arrested in a raid on Beit Inan town in occupied Jerusalem. The Israeli forces also carried out a raid into the town of ar-Ram, north of the city.

Israeli army says home of man accused in Tal shooting to be destroyed

The Israeli army says on its X account that the Palestinian man at the center of last month’s violence in the occupied West Bank village of Tal will have his home “confiscated and destroyed”.

Israeli settlers stormed and attacked the village in late July, triggering confrontations with residents. In the ensuing violence, at least six people were killed, including two Israeli soldiers.

Israeli soldiers accuse the man, who was killed on site and named as Farouk Ramadan, of shooting the two soldiers.

The incident kicked off a huge wave of violence against Palestinians in the West Bank – at the hands of both Israeli settlers and soldiers.

What does international law say when the Israeli occupying belligerent confiscate and destroys the house of a man who was proven (video) defending an attack by Israeli colonists in Tal?

Under international law, the confiscation and destruction of a house in this context violates key protections, specifically constituting unlawful property destruction, a prohibition on collective punishment, and a denial of the right to self-defense.

Article 53 of the Fourth Geneva Convention and Article 46 of the Hague Regulations of 1907 generally prohibit the destruction or confiscation of private property by an occupying power, unless absolutely necessary for military operations.

Actions taken against residents defending themselves from Israeli colonist attacks in the territory, de facto under gradual annexation, are illegal. Furthermore, because Israeli colonies are considered illegal under Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, the destruction of property to facilitate them has no legal basis.

Under Article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention and Article 50 of the Hague Regulations, collective penalties, intimidation, and measures of terrorism against protected civilians and their property are strictly prohibited. Palestinian Prisoners’ Society condemns continuing Israeli raids, arrests in West Bank

Israeli forces made 630 arrests in the occupied West Bank during the month of July, according to the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society, in what it says is a campaign of “aggression against the Palestinian people”.

While making their arrests, Israeli forces also carried out field interrogations, raided numerous homes, destroyed Palestinian property and assaulted detainees and their families, according to the organisation.

As of the beginning of August, Israel was holding more than 9,400 Palestinians in custody, including 370 children and 92 women, the group added.

Israeli military claims it destroyed weapon production machines in occupied West Bank

Israel’s military says it carried out several operations yesterday in the occupied West Bank, including dismantling weapon production machines and arresting a person it says is affiliated with the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) group.

The Israeli military said it destroyed the weapon production machines in the Qabatiya area, while apprehending the alleged PIJ affiliate in the Nablus area.

It said its forces will continue to operate in the area.

Israeli forces fire tear gas, destroy monuments in occupied West Bank

Israeli forces have carried out several new raids in the occupied West Bank, storming the towns of Beit Fajjar and Al-Lubban ash-Sharqiyah, according to the Wafa news agency.

Israeli forces fired tear gas and stun grenades in both towns, while also raiding and damaging a commercial kiosk in Beit Fajjar, said the agency.

Earlier, Israeli forces vandalized several Palestinian monuments in Tulkarem and a nearby town, in what the local governor called “a blatant attack on public property”, reported Wafa.

Israel election pressure fuels West Bank settlement push

As Israel gears up to hold elections in October, a dramatic surge in settlement activity has heightened concerns that the settler movement is stepping up efforts to cement its grip on the occupied West Bank, in stark defiance of international law.

The uptick follows a parliamentary term during which Israel moved to entrench control over the West Bank deeper within the machinery of the state, shifting authority from military administration to civilian institutions, accelerating settlement planning and expanding infrastructure.

However, the Religious Zionist Party of Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich – the man widely credited as pushing the settler project to the forefront of Israeli political debate – is suggested by numerous opinion polls to be far from certain to even meet the electoral threshold for the post-election Knesset.

This has prompted what analysts describe as a desperate scramble to promote the settlement mission while consolidating the support of the settler minority that Smotrich grew up within.

Shop owners dismantle businesses in West Bank village after Israeli demolition orders

Palestinian shop owners in Aaba village in the occupied West Bank are dismantling cafes, shops and other businesses after receiving demolition orders from Israeli authorities. Residents say settlement outposts have rapidly expanded towards the commercial hub in recent months.

Article 53 of the Fourth Geneva Convention forbids an occupier from destroying civilian property, as military necessity cannot be broadly interpreted to cover routine administrative zoning or political objectives. The issued orders are a violation of this article.

Under Article 8(2)(b)(xiii) of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, extensive destruction and appropriation of property, not justified by military necessity and carried out unlawfully and wantonly, constitutes a war crime.
