Iraq condemns drone attacks on Erbil

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi has condemned a drone attack in the city of Erbil in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq.

In a post on X, al-Zaidi said that Iraq “strongly condemns” the attack and will not tolerate attempts to undermine the country’s stability and security.

He added that security agencies have been ordered to coordinate with Kurdish regional forces to prevent further attacks.

The statement came after police in Erbil reported five drone attacks, saying one was shot down near the US consulate, resulting in a fire and triggering the mission’s air defence system.

Police said two other drones crashed near a US base on the outskirts of the city.

Northern Iraq’s main gas field shut down

UAE-based Dana Gas, the operator of northern Iraq’s Khor Mor gas field, has shut down its main production facilities due to credible security threats and escalating regional tensions, according to a company spokesman.

The suspension has reduced power generation capacity in the Iraqi-Kurdistan region by 2,500 megawatts, according to the electricity ministry. The Khor Mor field with its large gas reserves is the main producer of the region’s electricity.

The regional capital, Erbil, was targeted with at least five drones on Wednesday, including the main airport and the US consulate.

US embassy in Baghdad issues security alert for citizens in Iraq

The US Embassy in Baghdad has advised US citizens in Iraq to be on alert following a drone attack on Erbil on Wednesday.

“US citizens are advised: ‘Do not travel to Iraq due to terrorism, kidnapping,
armed conflict, civil unrest, and the US government’s limited ability to provide
emergency services to U.S. citizens in Iraq. Do not travel to Iraq for any reason,'” the embassy posted on social media.

The embassy advised US citizens to avoid protests or demonstrations and, in case of an attack, stay away from debris.
