‘US forces will be out of Iraq’ by September 30: Iraqi PM

The US military would leave Iraq by the end of September following a 23-year presence that started with the 2003 invasion against Saddam Hussein, according to American and Iraqi officials.

“We don’t think we need the military there any more,” Trump said alongside Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi in Washington, DC, while noting Iraq’s growing relationships with US oil companies.

Speaking through an interpreter, al-Zaidi said that “US forces will be out of Iraq” by September 30, “while US companies will be inside Iraq”.

The Pentagon said in a statement that it was reaffirming a 2024 agreement with Iraq to end its mission against ISIL (ISIS). About 2,500 US troops were still serving in Iraq at the time of the agreement.

Hegseth presses Iraq to disarm paramilitary groups linked to Iran

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth hosted Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi at the Pentagon and laid out Washington’s conditions for a deeper partnership with Baghdad.

In a post on X shortly after the meeting, Hegseth said Iraq “must assert its sovereignty and disarm the Iran-aligned militias” that he blames for frequent attacks on US forces amid the US-Israel war on Iran.

He wrote on his X-account:

"I hosted Iraqi PM Ali al-Zaidi at the Pentagon today.

To deepen our partnership, Iraq must assert its sovereignty and disarm the Iran-aligned militias responsible for 600+ attacks on U.S. personnel this spring.

The U.S. is also looking to the Iraqi Security Forces, including the Peshmerga and other Iraqi Kurdistan Region security forces, to lead in D-ISIS efforts as the OIR military missions winds down.

A secure Iraq opens the door to strong commercial and defense cooperation.

Iraq’s Kataib Hezbollah warns of joining war

Abu Mujahid al-Assaf, an official of Kataib Hezbollah, an Iran-backed Iraqi armed group, has said that the launch of “a new war against Iran would trigger an immediate response from the Iraqi resistance”.

“If a war is launched against the Islamic Republic of Iran, the participation of the resistance forces will be immediate and certain. This decision is rooted in our ideology and is not open to negotiation,” al-Assaf said in a statement, quoted by Iran’s Fars news agency.

Unidentified drone crashes in Iraq’s Grand Faw Port project

An unidentified drone crashed inside the Grand Faw Port project in Iraq’s southern Basra province, an Iraqi security source is reporting.

The incident caused no casualties, and damage was limited, local media reported.

Operations at Iraq port hit by drone unaffected, no casualties

A drone has crashed in an open area of the container yard at the Grand Faw Port on Iraq’s Gulf coast, a statement by the port authority confirms.

It is unclear who launched the drone.

“The company confirms that the incident did not result in any human or material damage as the drone crashed in an open area far from workers, equipment and facilities, and the incident did not affect the workflow or operational processes within the port, which continue as normal,” it said.

Iraqi authorities have begun an investigation into the incident.

Five drone attacks reported across Erbil in northern Iraq

Five drone attacks have been reported across Erbil in northern Iraq, Erbil police have told Al Jazeera.

Police say a drone was shot down near the US consulate in central Erbil, resulting in a fire and triggering the mission’s air defence system.

Two other drones crashed near a US base on the outskirts of the city.

In a separate incident, a drone exploded near the outer wall of Erbil airport, delaying some scheduled flights. Another one was shot down over Hariri airbase, east of the city.
