Cargo vessel hit by projectile off Yemen, casualties reported

A cargo vessel in the southern Red Sea has been struck by an unknown projectile off the coast of al-Makha, Yemen, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) on X.

UKMTO said it had been informed that the vessel “has been hit by an unknown projectile resulting in casualties … Authorities are investigating”.

“Vessels are advised to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity to UKMTO,” it added.

Houthi attack on ship kills 3, says Yemeni government

Yemen’s Saudi-backed government says a Houthi attack on a commercial ship in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait in the Red Sea killed three people.

British maritime security company Vanguard reports that at least two people have been killed on the attacked ship and the third on the Yemeni Navy vessel that was deployed to assist it.

“Two crew members, one Pakistani and one Indonesian national, were killed, while four others, comprising three Pakistani and one Indonesian national, were injured,” the agency added. “The Yemeni Navy subsequently deployed to assist the vessel and came under fire, resulting in one additional casualty.”

The incident comes after a years-long truce in Yemen’s civil war between the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels and the Saudi-backed internationally recognized government collapsed last month amid the US-Israeli war on Iran.

Death toll rises to four in Houthi attack on ship in Bab al-Mandeb Strait

Yemen’s Transport Ministry has updated the death toll from the Houthi attack on a commercial vessel in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait to four, in a new statement identifying the victims as three Pakistani nationals and one Indonesian.

The ministry said Houthi rebels fired three ballistic missiles at the Yemeni commercial vessel, then fired an additional missile targeting rescue teams attempting to reach it, wounding a Yemeni rescuer.

The attack follows the collapse last month of a years-long truce between the Iranian-backed Houthis and Yemen’s internationally recognised government, amid the US-Israel war on Iran.

Yemen says Houthis launched series of attacks on western coast

Yemen’s government forces say that the Houthis have launched 10 missiles and 4 drones during a series of attacks on sites on the country’s western coast.

In a statement, the forces said that they managed to shoot down one of the drones, adding that they were standing by in case of further attacks.

Death toll rises to six in Houthi attack on ship in Bab al-Mandeb Strait

Yemen’s Coast Guard says that six people have been killed and 10 others injured from the Houthi attack on a commercial vessel in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, raising an earlier death toll of four.

Mazhar works on a sea that has long been a front line in Yemen’s conflict.

The fisherman, based in the city of al-Makha (also known as Mocha) on Yemen’s Red Sea coast, has long struggled to make a living since war arrived in the region in 2015.

Fuel is expensive, and so is renting a boat. But Mazhar, who is in his 40s and has a family that relies on his fishing income, has a bigger problem: whenever he sets out to sea, he might not return home.

“Recently, a fishing boat in al-Khawkhah was fired on, and we lost two colleagues,” Mazhar said. “No one knows why, and the authorities haven’t announced the cause of the incident.”

Venturing beyond the shoreline is a dangerous gamble since the sea turned into a battlefield – Mazhar knows fishermen who have gone missing without a trace. But when there’s no food left at home, he decides to risk it anyway.
