UN chief Guterres to visit Syria’s Golan Heights
The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is visiting Syria on a trip he’s describing as one of solidarity, giving President Ahmed al-Sharaa and this government a major international endorsement.
The schedule is quite busy. The priorities from what I can tell are going to be his scheduled visit to the UN forces in the Golan Heights. Israel has been making incursions repeatedly into southern Syria, actually creating new security zones beyond the disengagement line established in 1974, and this is an issue the president is expected to highlight with the UN secretary-general.
This morning I’ve seen an increase in the presence of general security throughout the city, especially here in the central part, as well as the roads leading to the People’s Palace and the Tishreen Palace. The UN secretary-general has already met al-Sharaa in the People’s Palace.
The trip to the south of the country in the Golan Heights is going to be a challenge for everybody. I’m sure people will be on the edge of their seats, because there has been increased tension in that part of the country, both with Israeli incursions, attacks on places in Deraa, as well as incursions into Quneitra.
But the Syrian government is on high alert to make sure that none of this affects the safe movement for the UN secretary-general during his visit.
