Vehicle allegedly carrying weapons to Lebanon seized in Syria

Syrian Customs and Ports Authority announced it seized weapons allegedly being smuggled towards Lebanon.

The shipment included 226 improvised explosive devices that were hidden in a vehicle heading to Lebanon, it said.

Last week, Syrian authorities said they seized a shipment of weapons, which included long-range missiles, rockets and drones, at its border with Iraq, alleging they foiled an ⁠attempt to ⁠smuggle arms to Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The Iran-backed Lebanese group denied having any activity in Syria, dismissing the accusations as “fabricated narratives with no basis in fact, aimed at harming Hezbollah”.

Trump says Syrian president would like to fight Hezbollah and would be ‘effective’

During  interview with reporters while Lebanese president Aoun sat next to him, Trump was asked if he supports Syrian military action against Hezbollah, he said “it’s a concept”.

He said that Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has “done a very good job, he’s pulled Syria together”.

“He would like to come in and do something with Hezbollah, you know, they’ve been fighting, he’s been fighting Hezbollah for a long time,” he added.

“I think it’d be very effective.”

UN chief to visit Syria

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will travel to Syria later this week at the invitation of the government, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric has said.

“The visit will offer the secretary-general an opportunity to witness both the hope and the challenges of the political transition and recovery, as well as the impact of the enduring of years of conflict,” Dujarric told reporters in New York.

Guterres will meet with President Ahmed Al-Sharaa, Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and other government officials in Damascus and will “underscore the importance of respecting Syria’s sovereignty, its unity, and its territorial integrity”, Dujarric added.

This will be Guterres’s second visit to the region this year, after Lebanon in March.
