The Lebanese group says it targeted an Israeli base in Haifa in retaliation for the killing of Iran’s Khamenei, “in defense of Lebanon and its people and in response to the repeated Israeli aggressions”.

“The resistance leadership has always affirmed that the continuation of Israeli aggression and the assassination of our leaders, youth and people gives us the right to defend ourselves and respond at the appropriate time and place,” the group said in a statement.

“The Israeli enemy cannot continue its fifteen-month-long aggression without a warning response to halt this aggression and withdraw from the occupied Lebanese territories.”

Hezbollah confirms that these projectiles were sent in retaliation for the killing of the Iranian supreme leader, after Israel and the US started their attack on Iran early on Saturday.

Of course, that breaks the ceasefire that was in place since November 2024.

Israel continued attacking Hezbollah on Lebanese soil since the ceasefire started, but Hezbollah, on its end, had said it had remained committed to the ceasefire.

The fighting is entering the third day, and yet another front has been opened, in Lebanon this time.

Ali Rizk, a Beirut-based security analyst, says Hezbollah still “possesses quite a formidable arsenal” despite the pounding it received from Israel during the genocidal war on Gaza.

Rizk said that some Hezbollah officials have been expecting Israel to target leaders of the armed group after the attacks on Iran.

“Hezbollah believes that it’s going to be next on the list,” Rizk said.

The group may also be testing Israel’s ability to handle a new front in the war, he said.

Hezbollah enters the fray. Why now?

For more than 15 months, Hezbollah has observed a de facto one-sided ceasefire, absorbing near-daily Israeli attacks without responding.

The status quo symbolized the decline of the group that was once considered a fearsome regional force. Yet, the group was not ready to wave the white flag. It projected defiance and rejected calls to disarm.

Now, it has struck back – not only in response to the Israeli violations, but to put what remains of its capabilities on the Iranian side of the scale in the ongoing regional war.

Iran has been Hezbollah’s patron, acting as its main funder and weapon supplier. Without Tehran, it would be difficult for Hezbollah to rebuild its arsenal, pay its fighters or run its social programs.

So the fight for the survival of the Iranian ruling system is an existential matter for Hezbollah. The Lebanese group may also be looking to alter the current balance of power that practically allows Israel freedom of military action in Lebanon.

But it’s unclear whether it can hurt Israel or meaningfully help Iran in the ongoing conflict.

The group’s opening strike consisted of a few rockets that did not result in any casualties.

Hezbollah has lost thousands of fighters since the start of Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza in October 2023. Its military wing is believed to have been significantly degraded. And it is dealing with a Lebanese public that is weary of war and crises.

Hezbollah domestic opponents, including Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, are already decrying the attack on Israel, saying it will only embolden Israeli violations against Lebanon.

The question title is wrong, while the content refers to Hezbollah's involvement in the Israeli genocidal war on Gaza, and what the group had to endure in 2025.

The war on Iran is not about survival but about Iran's nuclear program that the Israelis, who started the war in June 2025, think they can destroy including the regime.

On February 28, 2026, and after 6 months of preparation in 2025 by the Israeli Mossad and the CIA, while knowing that Hezbollah would respond, the Israelis assassinated the Iranian Supreme Leader Khamenei triggering a spillover of the war on Iran into Lebanon.

‘Heavy exodus’ from southern Lebanon to Beirut

The Lebanese National News Agency is reporting “massive displacement” in the south of the country following the exchange of fire between Israel and Hezbollah.

It said there is a “heavy exodus” from the Tyre region towards Beirut and northern Lebanon.

It said civil defense teams are directing traffic.

The city’s Dahiyeh suburbs, which Israel issued the displacement order for, is home to hundreds of thousands of people. People here are packing what they can and making their way to what they believe will be safer areas.

Dahiyeh is considered a stronghold for Hezbollah. It has been repeatedly attacked during the last war in 2024 and on a number of occasions since then. There was a ceasefire in November of that year, but it was one-sided. Israel has not respected that agreement and continues to carry out attacks, accusing Hezbollah of rearming and accusing the Lebanese state of not doing enough to disarm the group.

It’s chaos in Beirut. And it’s also Ramadan, when people fast during daylight hours. The people are supposed to be having their final meal before fasting today, and instead, they are looking for shelter.

Lebanon’s president slams Israel and Hezbollah

Joseph Aoun says the attacks launched by Hezbollah on Israel from Lebanese territory undermine the government’s efforts to “keep Lebanon away from the dangerous military confrontations taking place; ace in the region”.

He also went on to denounce “Israeli aggression” against Lebanon.

“We condemn the Israeli attacks on Lebanese territories, and alert that the continued use of Lebanon again as a platform for supporting wars unrelated to us will once again expose our country to risks once more”.

US urges citizens not to travel to Lebanon, to leave immediately

The US embassy in the Lebanese capital of Beirut has called on its citizens to not travel to the country.

It has also urged those already there to “depart Lebanon NOW while commercial flight options remain available”, it said in a social media post.

“The security situation in Lebanon is volatile and unpredictable. Airstrikes have occurred throughout the country, especially in the south, the Beqaa, and parts of Beirut.”

While Israel sometimes issues advance warnings before strikes, several of the attacks in the past few hours appear to have come without warning. Often when that happens, the targets are specific individuals.

Israeli strikes on Lebanon have killed at least 52 people and wounded 154 others, the Lebanese government said in an updated toll.

An earlier casualty toll shared by the Health Ministry said 31 people were killed and 149 wounded.

As Israeli strikes continued across Lebanon today, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam announced that Hezbollah’s military activities are now officially prohibited, with the cabinet instructing the army to fast-track the group’s disarmament “by any means necessary”.

David Wood, senior analyst for Lebanon at the International Crisis Group, warned that any direct confrontation between the army and Hezbollah would have serious consequences.

“Some Lebanese Shia soldiers might desert from the army’s ranks or even defect to Hezbollah’s side, causing the armed forces to splinter,” he said.

Hezbollah’s decision to attack Israel following its strikes on Iran risks further destabilising Lebanon at an already fragile moment, Wood added.

“For Hezbollah to attack Israel and precipitate a massive military escalation – in Iran’s name – is a pill too bitter for many Lebanese to swallow,” he said, describing the move as “all the more reckless” given Israel’s growing military superiority over the group.

Hezbollah was significantly weakened during the 2024 war, in which its longtime leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed by Israel. Since then, Israel has continued to carry out almost daily strikes on southern Lebanon.

Hamas condemns Israeli strikes on Lebanon

Hamas has criticised what it described as “aggression” by Israel against Lebanese territory, calling it a “dangerous escalation”.

In a statement, the Palestinian group said the air strikes are part of “ongoing violations against Lebanon and its sovereignty” and an extension of what it described as Israeli assaults across the Middle East.

Hamas said it holds Israel “fully responsible for the repercussions” and expressed solidarity with Lebanon.
