Saudi Arabia under attack by militia drones launched from Iraq

Saudi Arabia’s air defenses systems have destroyed drones coming from Iraq, the Defense Ministry says.

The unmanned aerial vehicles attempted to target oil facilities in Saudi Arabia’s eastern region, it said in a statement.

The ministry alleged the drones were launched by Iran-aligned armed groups in Iraq. Yemen’s Houthis said they targeted oil facilities in Saudi Arabia owned by Aramco in the latest escalation between the two sides.

Major-General Turki Al-Maliki says Saudi air defences intercepted “a number of drones” over the past few hours and the country reserves the right to respond to Iran-backed armed group in Iraq.

Al-Maliki, the Defense Ministry spokesman, said in a statement “these terrorist attempts were launched from Iraqi territory and carried out by Iranian-backed terrorist militias”.

He affirmed the kingdom’s “legitimate right to defend itself and its capabilities and its retention of the right to respond at the appropriate time and place”.

Saudi Arabia is suspected of allowing preparation and support activities from US bases in the country for attacks on Iran. It is therefore seen as co-belligerent of the US, which is a war belligerent.

Iran may have the right to consider Saudi Arabia a military objective.

Jordan condemns drone attacks targeting Saudi Arabia

Jordan has denounced attempted air attacks on Saudi Arabia’s oil facilities.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said projectile strikes that Riyadh said originated from Iraq are a “flagrant violation of Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty, a threat to its security and stability and a serious breach of international law and the United Nations Charter”, the Jordan News Agency reported.

Amman reiterated its solidarity with Riyadh, saying it supported all efforts taken to protect its security.

Iraqi PM orders investigation into Saudi drone attack

Iraq’s Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaidi has ordered security authorities to investigate Saudi Arabia’s claims that drones targeting the kingdom were launched from Iraqi territory, according a statement by armed forces spokesman Sabah Al-Numan.

Baghdad said it remains committed to preventing Iraqi soil from being used as a launch pad for attacks on neighboring states, and warned it will take legal action against anyone found responsible once the investigation concludes.

The government described its ties with Saudi Arabia as “deep-rooted and fraternal,” vowing to protect Iraq’s sovereignty and safeguard regional security and stability.

Pakistan condemns drone attacks against Saudi Arabia

Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry has “strongly” condemned drone attacks against Saudi Arabia, calling them “provocative” acts that pose a “grave threat” to peace and stability across the region, in a statement posted on X.

Islamabad reaffirmed its “unwavering support” for the kingdom’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and peace and prosperity, saying it will continue taking all possible steps to support lasting peace and stability in the region.

Series of explosions heard in Erbil

Media reports from northern Iraq say a series of explosions have been heard in the Kurdish Regional Government’s capital, Erbil.

At least seven explosions have been reported across Erbil in northern Iraq, including near the US Consulate, according to Iraqi media and Iran’s Fars news agency.

Northern Iraq’s largest gas field attacked: Iran state media

Iran’s state-run IRIB is reporting an attack on northern Iraq’s Khor Mor gas field, which supplies a majority of the region’s electricity.

IRIB says the gas field, in Sulaymaniyah in Iraq’s KRG, was attacked early on Tuesday, around the same time explosions were reported in Erbil, around 200km away.

4 Iranian drones target areas near Erbil: Police sources

At least four Iranian drones have targeted locations in northern Iraq’s Khalifan and Soran areas, northeast of Erbil, according to police sources speaking to Al Jazeera.

They say that more than ten US warplanes and drones are reportedly flying over Erbil in response to the suspected Iranian drone attack.

Huge fires have broken out in and around the targeted areas, and two drones crashed near the targeted sites, according to the police.

US drone shot down over Iraq’s Anbar: Media reports

Iran’s state broadcaster, quoting Iraqi media, says a US drone has been shot down in Iraq’s western, Anbar province.

IRIB shared images of a smoldering drone, which it said crashed inside a residential complex.

‘Unknown drone’ crashed in Iraq’s Anbar: Police sources

A drone of unknown origin landed in the vicinity of the Haditha Dam residential complex, west of Anbar, Iraq’s largest province, according to police sources.

Earlier, the Iranian state broadcaster, quoting Iraqi media, had reported a US drone crashing into a residential compound after being shot down in western Iraq.

The police sources say there are no reports of casualties or damage.
