Protests erupted across Pakistan on Sunday, with 20 people dead and dozens wounded nationwide, after the United States and Israel confirmed the killing of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in coordinated air strikes on Tehran.

The deaths included 10 people in Karachi, at least eight in Skardu and two in the capital, Islamabad, as demonstrations largely led by members of Pakistan’s Shia Muslim community escalated and security forces fired tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters.

Pakistan, a country of more than 250 million people, is predominantly Sunni Muslim, but Shia account for more than 20 percent of the population and are spread across the country.

In Islamabad, thousands gathered near the Red Zone, the heavily fortified district that houses the parliament, government offices and foreign embassies. Protesters chanted, “Those who side with the US are traitors” and called for “revenge against Israel”.

Iranian media say 20 killed in attack on Tehran’s Niloofar Square

The Mehr news agency is reporting that more than 20 people have lost their lives in an attack on the Niloofar Square in Tehran. This shows the scope of the attacks on Iran, with raids targeting not just political centres and military headquarters. It all started in the Pasteur neighborhood, where the offices of the supreme leader and the president are located.

Iran’s 10th missile wave raises fears in Israel and West Bank

Iran has launched a 10th wave of missile attacks on Israel, which has raised the level of anticipation and anxiety among people here, not just in Israel, but also in the occupied West Bank, where residents do not have access to the same home front alert systems, air raid alarms, Israeli defence systems, or fortified shelters.

Trump administration officials have told the US Congress that there were no signs that Iran planned to attack the US before the US-Israeli strikes that killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Reuters has reported.

In closed-door briefings, Pentagon officials told congressional staff that Iran’s ballistic missiles and proxy forces posed an imminent threat to US interests, but they acknowledged that there was no intelligence suggesting that Tehran planned to attack US forces first, according to the news agency, which cited two people familiar with the matter.

The report casts doubt on earlier claims by Trump administration officials that there were indications that Tehran could “preemptively” attack US forces.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) says the 11th wave of Iranian missiles and drones targeted Israel’s Beersheba (Bir as-Sab) city, according to the Tasnim news agency.

The report claimed the Israeli army’s communications industries complex was hit in the city. Later, the agency posted a photo of what it claimed was a building targeted in Bir as-Sab’, “which houses major international companies, including Microsoft”.

Rising concern over civilian deaths as US, Israel launch attacks across Iran

In Sanandaj, footage showed huge explosions; also in other cities across the country, such as Bushehr, and in the southern part of Iran.

In Tehran, from midnight up until the last hour, sounds of massive explosions were heard, all indicating that the trajectory of the strikes by Israel and the US continues up to the moment.

That’s not limited only to military headquarters or political centers.

Across the city, residential areas and civilian areas are being targeted, leaving fatalities. In one of them, in Tehran’s Niloofar Square, at least 20 people were killed.

Added to that is the very disastrous footage that is coming from Minab, where an elementary school for girls was targeted, leaving more than 160 dead.

There are concerning numbers regarding the civilian deaths in other cities and places, as well.

Israel’s largest airport to reopen in ‘extremely limited format’

Israel’s main international gateway, Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv, says it expects to reopen this evening in what it describes as an “extremely limited format”.

In a message posted on its WhatsApp channel cited by Reuters, the airport said flight operations would gradually expand from Tuesday, depending on the security situation. Only Israeli carriers are expected to resume flights initially.

El Al Israel Airlines said it was seeking approval to operate charter flights from Europe to destinations bordering Israel to help return passengers stranded abroad.

The carrier said it was planning flights from more than 20 cities, including New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Bangkok, London, Paris and other European destinations, to bring back an estimated 40,000 passengers.

Constant state of emergency in Israel is putting ‘significant pressure’ on the population

In the afternoon, Israel faced six waves of Iranian missiles. The attacks spanned a very large area, covering much of Israeli territory and parts of the occupied West Bank, from Ashkelon on the southern coast all the way to Netanya, as well as areas of the Negev.

Sirens were going off across these regions, followed by reports of impacts, including near Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport, where a building was struck by shrapnel.

In Ashkelon, most of the injuries were light, with only one person described as being in moderate condition.

However, the sustained state of emergency, with constant sirens and repeated missile alerts, has placed significant pressure on the population, keeping people in or near shelters and severely disrupting daily life.

In the occupied West Bank, where there are no public shelters, schools have shifted to online instruction for at least the coming week.

Israel claims to have killed 2 senior intelligence officials in Iran

The Israeli army says two senior Iranian intelligence officials have been killed in Iran in the first wave of attacks on the country on February 28.

The military statement published on Monday identified the victims as Sayed Yahya Hamidi and Jalal Pour Hossein.

It said Hamidi was deputy minister of intelligence for Israel affairs, claiming he “led terrorist activities targeting Jews, Western actors, and regime opponents in Iran and abroad”.

The statement also claimed Hossein was head of the espionage division at Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence.

“Together with them, additional senior terrorists were eliminated,” it said.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has tried to justify the coordinated attacks with Israel on Iran by saying they were driven by self-defence.

Faced with questions from reporters on whether the Trump administration needed congressional approval to wage war on Iran, Rubio attempted to frame the US actions as aimed at preempting Iranian strikes against US bases in the region.

“If we stood and waited for that attack [from Iran] to come first, before we hit them, we would suffer much higher casualties,” Rubio said. “And so, the president made a very wise decision: We knew that there was going to be an Israeli action. We knew that would precipitate an attack against American forces. And we knew that if we didn’t preemptively go after them before they launched those attacks, we would suffer higher casualties”.

Anyone with a logical thinking knows that Iran cannot attack the territory of the United States because of its geographical location beyond the horizon.

But, Iran uses international law: the is US is an attacking war belligerent that is hosted by GCC countries and Jordan. Tehran knows that these countries are co-belligerent of the US and has the right to consider these host countries military objectives. So yes, Iran attacks US presence in these countries.
